Hedy Background Operation Optimization Guide

If you are having trouble running Hedy in the background, here are some tips to troubleshoot your device settings.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

For All Android Devices

Basic Permissions

  1. Long-press Hedy app icon > App info

  2. Tap Permissions > Enable:

    1. Microphone

    2. Notifications

    3. Display over other apps ("Always on top")

Battery Optimization

  1. Settings > Apps > Hedy > Battery

  2. Set to Unrestricted

  3. Make sure Background restriction is not enabled

Lock Hedy in Recent Apps

  1. Open Recent Apps (swipe up and hold from the bottom of your screen)

  2. Find Hedy in the list

  3. Long-press Hedy's preview > tap the Lock icon

Why this matters: Locking Hedy in Recent Apps prevents the system from closing it in the background. This is the single most effective step on most phones.

Important: Some phone manufacturers reset these settings after system updates. If Hedy stops working after an update, re-check the settings below for your phone brand.

Xiaomi / POCO / Redmi

Xiaomi phones (including POCO and Redmi) have some of the most aggressive battery restrictions. You may need to change several settings to keep Hedy running.

1. Set Battery Saver to No Restrictions

  1. Settings > Apps > Manage apps

  2. Find and tap Hedy

  3. Tap Battery saver

  4. Select No restrictions

2. Enable Autostart

  1. Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Hedy

  2. Tap App permissions

  3. Enable Background autostart

On older MIUI versions: Open the Security app > Permissions > Auto-start > enable Hedy.

3. Lock Hedy in Recent Apps

  1. Open Recent Apps

  2. Find Hedy and drag it downwards, or long-press and tap the padlock icon

  3. A lock icon should appear on the app card

Locked apps are protected from being cleared, even when you tap "Clear all."

4. Lock in Boost Speed (Optional)

  1. Open the Security app

  2. Tap Boost speed

  3. Tap the Settings (gear) icon

  4. Tap Lock apps > select Hedy

This provides extra protection against the "Ultra battery saver" feature.

Note: Xiaomi may re-enable battery restrictions after system updates. If Hedy stops working after an update, re-check all the settings above.

Samsung

Samsung requires several settings to prevent Hedy from being put to sleep.

1. Set Hedy to Unrestricted

  1. Settings > Apps > Hedy > Battery

  2. Set to Unrestricted

2. Add to Never Sleeping Apps

  1. Settings > Battery > Background usage limits

  2. Tap Never sleeping apps

  3. Tap + and select Hedy

3. Disable "Put Unused Apps to Sleep"

  1. Settings > Battery > Background usage limits

  2. Disable Put unused apps to sleep

Warning: Even after adding Hedy to "Never sleeping apps," Samsung may move it back to sleep after a firmware update. Re-check this setting after any system update.

4. Disable Auto Optimization

  1. Settings > Battery > More battery settings

  2. Disable Auto optimization (if available)

  3. Disable Adaptive battery

On One UI 7 (Android 15), some of these options may have moved. Look under Settings > Battery and device care > Battery for similar options.

5. Lock in Recent Apps

  1. Open Recent Apps

  2. Long-press Hedy > tap Lock this app

OnePlus

OnePlus phones have severe background limits that can also reset after firmware updates.

1. Disable Battery Optimization

  1. Settings > Apps > (gear icon) > Special Access > Battery Optimization

  2. Switch filter to All apps

  3. Find Hedy > select Don't optimize

2. Disable Advanced Optimization

  1. Settings > Battery > Battery optimization

  2. Tap the three-dot menu > Advanced optimization

  3. Disable Deep optimization (or "Adaptive Battery")

  4. Disable Sleep standby optimization

Deep optimization is the main app killer on OnePlus. Disabling it is critical for Hedy to work properly.

3. Lock in Recent Apps

  1. Open Recent Apps > long-press Hedy > tap Lock

Warning: OnePlus may randomly revert the "Don't optimize" setting. Locking Hedy in Recent Apps helps prevent this.

Oppo / Realme

1. Enable Auto Start-up

  1. Settings > Apps > Hedy > App info

  2. Enable Allow Auto Start-up

2. Set Power Saver to No Restriction

  1. Settings > Apps > Hedy > Battery (or Power Saver)

  2. Select Allow background activity or No restriction

3. Lock in Recent Apps

  1. Open Recent Apps > swipe Hedy downwards > tap the lock icon

Huawei / Honor

1. Set App Launch to Manual

  1. Settings > Battery > App launch

  2. Find Hedy and set to Manage manually

  3. Enable all three toggles: Auto-launch, Secondary launch, and Run in background

2. Disable Battery Optimization

  1. Settings > search for "Battery optimization"

  2. Switch to All apps

  3. Find Hedy > select Don't allow optimization

3. Protected Apps (Older Devices)

  1. Settings > Advanced Settings > Battery Manager > Protected apps

  2. Enable Hedy as a Protected app

Vivo / iQOO

1. Enable Autostart

  1. Settings > More settings > Applications > Autostart

  2. Enable the toggle for Hedy

2. Allow High Background Power Consumption

  1. Settings > Battery

  2. Tap High background power consumption

  3. Find Hedy and enable it

3. Lock in Recent Apps

  1. Open Recent Apps > swipe Hedy downwards > tap the lock icon

Google Pixel / Stock Android

Pixel phones generally handle background apps well, but you should still check these settings:

  1. Settings > Apps > Hedy > Battery

  2. Make sure Background restriction is not enabled

  3. Set battery usage to Unrestricted

Final Checks

  1. Restart your device after making all changes

  2. Start a Hedy session and verify it keeps running with the screen off for 5+ minutes

  3. After any system update, re-check all settings above for your phone brand

Troubleshooting tip: If issues persist, disable any third-party battery saver or "RAM boost" apps. These can conflict with the system settings above. For more device-specific help, visit dontkillmyapp.com.
