Navigating the File Browser on iOS and Android

Many users find selecting files on their device challenging, especially when using the built-in file browsers on iOS and Android. Here are step-by-step tips for both platforms to help you import your audio and video files into Hedy smoothly.

Using the File Browser on iOS

When you tap “Import Audio File” in Hedy, the iOS file picker will appear. Here’s how to navigate it:

  • By default, you’ll see the “Recents” tab. If your file isn’t there, tap “Browse” at the bottom of the screen.

  • In “Browse,” you can access:

    • On My iPhone/iPad: Files saved directly to your device. You might need to tap "Hedy AI" at the top to change folders.

    • iCloud Drive: Files stored in your iCloud account.

    • Other Locations: Tap the three-dot menu (…) in the top-right to enable third-party storage providers (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox) if you have them installed.

  • To find files from other apps (like Voice Memos), look for folders named after those apps under “On My iPhone/iPad.”

  • Tap folders to open them. Tap a file to select it for import.

  • If you can’t find your file, use the search bar at the top to search by file name or extension (e.g., .mp3, .m4a).

  • For network shares (like SMB), you can add them in the Files app by tapping the three-dot menu (…) > “Connect to Server” and entering your server address.

Tips:

  • You can use third-party file manager apps like “Documents by Readdle” or “FileBrowser” for more advanced file management. These apps can integrate with the iOS Files app and make it easier to locate files across different sources.

  • If you want to transfer files from your computer, use AirDrop, iCloud Drive, or connect your device via USB and use Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows) to copy files into the “Files” app.

Using the File Browser on Android

When importing in Hedy, the Android file picker will open. Here’s how to use it:

  • You’ll typically see “Recent” files first. Tap the menu (≡) or “Browse” to see more locations.

  • Common locations include:

    • Internal Storage: The main storage for your device. Look for folders like “Music,” “Downloads,” or app-specific folders.

    • SD Card (if available): Tap to access files stored on your SD card.

    • Cloud Storage: If you have Google Drive or other cloud apps installed, you can access them here.

  • To navigate, tap folders to open them, and tap a file to select it.

  • Use the search icon to quickly find files by name or extension.

  • If you transferred files from your computer, they are usually in the “Downloads” folder or wherever you saved them during the transfer.

Tips:

  • For Android 11 and newer, you may need to grant Hedy permission to access “all files” for full access to device storage. Go to your device’s Settings > Apps > Hedy AI > Permissions, and enable “Files and Media” or “All files access” if prompted.

  • You can use third-party file manager apps (like “Solid Explorer” or “Files by Google”) for more advanced browsing. These apps can help you move or copy files to easily accessible folders before importing them into Hedy.

Troubleshooting File Selection Issues

  • If you can’t see your file, check if it’s in a supported format and stored in a folder accessible by the file picker.

  • Try moving the file to the “Downloads” or “Music” folder, which are always visible in the file browser.

  • On iOS, make sure the file is saved in the “Files” app and not just within another app’s private storage.

  • Audio import is a Pro feature

  • Files must be clear enough for accurate transcription

  • Larger files may take longer to process

  • Keep the app open during processing

After Import

Once processing is complete, your imported audio becomes a regular Hedy session with:

  • Full transcript

  • AI-generated summary

  • Key points and action items

  • Ability to chat about the content

Best Practices

  1. Ensure clear audio quality in your recordings

  2. Keep your device plugged in when processing large files

  3. Use a stable internet connection

  4. Select the appropriate session type for best analysis

While processing, don't:

  • Close the app

  • Lock your screen

  • Switch to other apps

This ensures successful file processing.

Troubleshooting

If your import fails:

  • Verify the file format is supported

  • Ensure sufficient device storage for temporary processing files

  • Try reducing background noise in the recording

  • Make sure your Pro subscription is active

Pro Tip: For best results, record your audio in a quiet environment with minimal background noise and clear speech.
