Hedy lets you choose whether your conversation data is stored in the European Union or the United States. This guide explains how data residency works and what it means for your account.
What Is Data Residency?
Data residency means the physical location of the servers where your data is stored. When you sign up for Hedy, you choose between two options:
European Union — Your conversations are stored on servers located in the EU
United States — Your conversations are stored on servers located in the US
This choice determines where your session recordings, transcripts, highlights, topics, and other conversation data are physically stored.
How to Choose Your Region
During onboarding, you'll see a screen titled "Where should we store your data?" with two options. Hedy automatically suggests a region based on your location, marked with a "Detected" badge, but you can choose either option.
Important: This choice is permanent and cannot be changed later. Please choose carefully.
What Data Is Stored in Your Chosen Region?
The following data is stored in the region you selected:
Session recordings and transcripts
Highlights and bookmarks
Topics and chat history
Custom prompts and contexts
Your settings and preferences
Some account services — such as login credentials, subscription management, and email communications — are handled by global services and are not affected by your region choice. These services do not contain your conversation content.
Viewing Your Region
You can see which region your data is stored in at any time. Go to Account Settings → Privacy Preferences. Your region is displayed with a flag icon and the label "Set during account setup."
Can I Change My Region?
No. Your data residency choice is permanent. Moving data between regions is technically complex and could risk data loss, which is why we ask you to choose carefully during signup.
If you need to use a different region, you would need to create a new account and select the preferred region during onboarding.
Existing Users
If you signed up before this feature was introduced, your data is stored in the United States. You can set a region preference in Account Settings → Privacy Preferences, which affects where new data is stored going forward. However, this does not move your existing conversations.
Frequently Asked Questions
The app suggested the wrong region. What do I do?
The automatic suggestion is based on your IP address and can sometimes be wrong (for example, if you're using a VPN). You can always tap the other option to override the suggestion during onboarding.I'm outside the EU and US. Where is my data stored?
Users outside the EU are directed to US storage by default, but you can choose EU during onboarding if you prefer. Is my data really stored in the EU?
Yes. If you chose EU, your conversations are processed and stored on servers located in the European Union. Login and billing are handled by global services, which is standard across the industry and disclosed in our privacy policy.
Need to check your region? Open Hedy, go to Account Settings → Privacy Preferences, and look for the flag icon showing your data storage location.
